The question we should be asking rather is, who is it for? Off the top of my head Trolli's about the only one that I can think of. Maybe Ursa but I'd rather save that slot for a bunch of different items for Ursa. Maybe a centaur, but you'd get blade mail for 2/3 the price.
Its a powerful snowball item.
Stomp lane > Vanguard > Stomp more > Crimson Guard to maximise stompiness.
Maybe viable for Axe. Better to ask, who is it good agaist. Blade mail might be better in some circumstances.
It is really great on Axe and BB.
I don't really have an opinion for it on centaur... i think pipe is still probably better on him due to self damage mitigation.
The active is really awesome. The thing not to overlook is that it is 50 damage mitigation 100% for 9 seconds that doesn't wear off in a damage threshold, and the 2 armor is also great.
other heroes i have seen it on is viper and necro... Viper should still get a meka, but if someone else wants to get it crimson is a valid replacement i think. It was aweful trying to kill that guy and i lost to it.
Axe -
I have played 3 axe games since the patch, and have done surprisingly well compared to last patch with axe. Between the 20% proc chance which is a huge buff, and Crimson guard, Axe feels like he hits his timing window really strong now.
Also for FyyQ, Doing pipe after crimson is awesome, but your team has to utilize it or you become a weak initiator. I won all my games with that set up, but by the end I would just blink call and then die.
Lastly.. If you are going crimson guard i would suggest not getting tranquils. I have been going arcanes but simple brown boots works too. With the extra armor from crimson, the tranquils become someone redundant when broken and you can work around the MS loss. That is my personal preference though since i like arcanes a lot on axe for spell spam.
It's a nasty item, like a mini omni knight ult. I was playing PA vs an axe who got it and whenever we team fought he'd stop all my dmg for 9 seconds. 50 block doesn't seem like a ton but at like level 15 or so it's probably a third of your physical dps.

Yeah I noticed it was nasty item, the active is so good. Had a game where we had a pl carry, the enemy team axe activated crimson guard. The pl illusions did literally zero damage for like the whole team fight. 50 damage block is alot. It's kind of like treant armor for the entire team. One person should get this on every team. It makes tower diving easy.

I feel it's situational like a S&Y. Good midgame item that falls off late, but the timing window is crucial to have some impact with it.
