When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. old vs. new arguments are alway heavily biased because the old crowd is physically and literally unable to recall the bad stuff which was released around the time they're referring to. Not only do they have a broader timeline to pick from (Akira and Eva, from late 80s and mid 90s respectively, but are often taken up in the same category), the stories and writing resonate with a broader audience. Not because they're more accessible but because they've already stood the test of time.
Any medium today is filled with the same amount of shit, as it was the case 10, 20 or even 50 years ago, it's just that shit only gets televised once, and that no one bothers to archive stuff like this, may it be physically or mentally.
Nostalgia is a whole diffrent factor which adds to the bias of the arguments, but if you like something due to the nostalgia you experience while watching/reading/listening more power to you. I say it's a valid emotion to feel. Only should one be aware of it and not try to sell something as better than it is, because you remember it being better in the days, when you were a stupid child, as supposed to an arguably stupider adult
