At the highest level, it will become a mere number (abed 10k, miracle insane play, etc etc) since playerpool is too low
at 0-7k (or maybe 8k?) it surely means something
I don't care about mmr and what you think it means i'll still carry worthless 3k's from 1.8k with a hero i have 20 games on.
@Yui - just for solo, or at least for what the person takes seriously
@dota in 2017 - thanks man, appreciate it
@glorious feeding - I agree, especially because servers come into play
@Abyss Watcher - lol, I don't take party ranked games seriously. I see them as practice games, but I don't wanna go Normal MM because most of them are just trolling.
@bearcat0611 - sure dude, whatever makes you sleep at night ;)
MMR is just a number the higher your mmr is the easier to get +25
Sure, not an easy game the way up but you will have better teammates.
MMR is just a number the higher your mmr is the easier to get +25
You're a moron and is just looking for excuses for your incapability for winning low mmr games singlehandedly
Have you ever thought the higher you go, you'll get better teammates AND opponents, who will most likely punish your little mistakes and roll over your team few minutes later?
Mmr is just a number, stomp on these 5ks daily.
Actually if I think about it, the higher mmr games are way smoother. Stomp a 5-6k game and lose to some 2.8-3.5k trash. The teammates you get matter more then you think. Not getting counter picked helps too, if they have no lockdown and u play SS I guess you can own everyone 1v5 in lower bracket games.
bank account is just a number!
fuck no , 20000000 is the "just number" , once you add kills/$/height/length/mmr it gives a very strict meaning that differentiate between individuals
@O mm Y - nah, not the case. My solo MMR is 3.5k now on my main account and when I play on my smurf I can literally carry the entire team, despite my midlane feeding the enemy MK (https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/3362771696). Can't do that in my 3.4k-3.5k games.
The difference between 2k and 3.5k is pretty big. The difference between 4.5k and 6k isn't much different at all.
mmr of course isn't a number, it measures how likely are you going to win a game given all equal skills.
Lol all these <4k noobs who think they're 6k
Just because they won a single game against a team with a 6kr that didn't give a single shit about a 3 k average game
"mmr is just a number" at higher mmrs. ppl who grind solo q or play pubstompers aren't necessarily better players.
but at lower mmrs (<5k) ofc mmr matters.
im not going to say that mmr means nothing because a 6k player will likely stomp me in any game we played but that also doesnt mean that a 1.8k player cant have a better performance than a 3k player.
not saying it would happen every game but i've done it.

bristle was 3k and at the start veno complained about my being 1.8k. We were behind early but me and the sniper brought the game back while veno and bristle were mostly useless.
l dont really care much about mmr anymore, cant flame your party, knowing them from the start, we wont win. Sometimes, just has to accept, the reality, the game is gonna reduce your mmr, so l just win them back and keep them around 2k exactly, cant do much.
@O.J. oh shit the 2k scrub. Is back.
OK why u always talk big and lose all the time?
That 41% winrate looks real hot.
I could care less about your stats/mmr bullcrap. To a 12 year veteran player like me, that is just some new generation bs for you young players these days. Even if you're 10k or 100k MMR, i wont sweat 1v1'ing you.

MMR is more than just a number, but the system has many flaws, and it disregards many variables, so it is by no means a direct indication of skill, and anomalies aplenty.
A 3K player with 5,000 games is bad compared to a 3K player with 100 games.
I've stomped 5.5K players mid, and gotten stomped by 3.5k players mid.
MMR gives a clue as to a player's skill-level, but as others have mentioned, it's not 100% indicative.
It is just a number dude. It's a number used as a tool to match you with players who perform about the same as you in ranked games so you get as close to a 50% expected win rate. Ie no one loses too much so dota stays fun (which also means no one wins too much).
People get really obsessed with grinding mmr and raising mmr etc, when they forget mmr exisiting long before it was exposed in ranked. It's how dota does matchmaking so you get better games appropriate for you as a player. It's actually a pretty good system.
@Stentorian you aint done SHIT. Why you talkin big when your skill level is at 2.3k MMR level... at best... on your best day. Damn.
MMR doesn't matter at pro level, because people are concentrated on winning competitive games rather than solo q. IMO a 9k pubstomper is still better than a 7k pubstomper. Miracle, W33, Ana all proved that a high level pubstomper have the skills to compete in pros.
but a 9k pubstomper isn't necessarily better than a 7k pro carry or mid, because the 7k pro doesn't play that much or care to rank up their mmr, like sumail or solo
Below 6k, however 5k very much matters. For example @stancework33 is a 3.2k who thinks he's better than 6kers. However, months later he's still 3.2k. He plays normally on HS bracket games. When he gets a higher average VHS game, he loses most of them at a 40%.
If I remember correctly VHS starts only at 3.5k. So this shows that even 3.5ks will win against 3.2ks most of the time. A 300 mmr difference at 3k matters alot.
Also remember that higher level players don't like playing with 3ks and 4kers. If you're matched with them, they clearly don't give a fuck since there's nothing at stake for them. I doubt playing against 6kers is a good indicator of their skill especially when you can't near their mmr.
I agree.
I 4k and I'm piloting one account here for his double ranked down stuff to boost his mmr and spam Sven (or TA when sven is banned). His mmr is 2.6k something and I win 9 out of 10 games. 1000+ mmr difference is something.
Mmr is obviously meaningful. Any 7k or 8k booster can get you out of your mmr given you are below 6k.
MMR is a number, reflecting your long-term winrate.
Ones who have a high long-term winrate are better at the game, because (duh) they win more than they lose by a margin higher than of the remainder of the players below them.
Happy to see that most of the members of the community agree with me, and thanks for also pointing out something I forgot to place in the post: that MMR is of less significance in higher brackets (7k-10k) but impacts the game highly in lower brackets.
MMR is a meme. Every mmr bracket has different memes. In 1k u may see lc jungle or cm carry. But in 5k or above that. U will see and amaze those sick plays performed by pubstars and pros...
except I jungle lc in 5k as well. There are plenty of jungle picks 5k above last patch. Teamwork in pubs period is nonexistent, which is why even ranked mm is so different from competitive.

I've always been a person who's said that MMR isn't just a number, but I was never really able to prove it (at least in the 2k-3k bracket). I'd get into arguments with friends about it and I'd just say, "Sure, whatever you say."
But recently I traded a 2.8k MMR account for a 2k MMR account with a friend, and I thought I'd have some fun.
I've been winning non-stop with exemplary records despite not playing too seriously (which explains the numerous deaths - I kinda get carried away and become to cocky).
My point? MMR isn't just a number, and until you learn to accept certain things in DotA and actually have the humility to learn, you will never improve.
I grinded my way to 3.5k and I'm pretty damn proud of it. Good luck on the grind and rid the system of cancer. ;)
P.S. I know that I am by no means a professional, nor good and I know that a 5k player can crap on 3k players like me, but this post serves a very specific purpose and scope, so if you comment on the post with a far-fetched answer, I suggest you study some logic and reasoning. :)
