You can get Linkens too or just straight BKB but I dunno I like Manta too, makes you somewhat of a decent fighter.
Manta in most games is better than Linken - easier to build, u can split push with it, better stats etc. Linken only vs Doom or hex initations.

Can remove Invoker's Orchid. Harder to cold snap him now as well.
Can dodge dazzle Q as well and possibly weave.
Remove Naga's net as well
Gyro missile dodge or maybe to soak up rocket barrage damage as well.
But he sold it for linkens eventually. He'll be playing a lot safer with that rapier (or atleast more protected by team) and the spellblock from linkens blocks the important disables of theirs such as missile, net, and orchid. Which he could most likely SoF dodge anyways.
I see, but why didnt he just go straight linkens ? or even bkb? is the manta stats rly gud?
linkens - can be wasted by bad spells, probably doesn't help you farm as fast in comparison to manta's stats and speed, since mana regen is meh when you can constantly return to base with travels and remnants.
bkb - duration goes down the more you use it, doesn't help you farm
manta - choose when to remove debuffs, so you can potentially get more out of it than linkens e.g. if you remove orchid at the same time as disjointing a stun then you're wasting 2 spells.
also you can use the illusions for extra tower damage.
