It is possible only for those people who have the number after /profiles in their profile.

For example, when you click on the steam ID on my dotabuff STEAM_0:0:47674964 you get the url of my steam profile and after /profile in url you'll see the number ( in my case it's 76561198055615656) and then you open Dota 2, go the add friend and when it asks you the number you copy that number (76561198055615656) and then you get to my profile and you'll see my friend ID(which dotabuff uses) in the top right corner of my profile(95349928) and then you simply copy that number after /players/ in the dotabuff url, for example http://www.dotabuff.com/players/95349928 .

Now the problem is that not all people have the number in their steam profile( for example the 2 posters above me don't) because that can be changed manually.

But the good thing to know is that you can search for players in Dota 2 by using both their friend ID and the number from their steam profile

the number behind "U:1:" is the number for profile that you put behind dotabuff.com/players/
